India Sets Goal to Cut Steel Emissions by 25% and Expand Capacity to 400 Million Tons by 2035
India is preparing to transform its steel industry by targeting a 25% reduction in emissions intensity under a draft National Steel Policy 2025. The plan aims to lower emissions from about 2.65 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel to 2 tonnes by 2035–36, bringing the country closer to global standards. The steel sector currently contributes around 10–12% of India’s total emissions, making it a key focus for climate action. At the same time, India plans to expand crude steel capacity to 400 million tonnes by 2035–36, more than doubling current levels. The expansion could require about $183 billion in investment and generate over 3 million jobs, supporting economic growth. The policy also promotes cleaner technologies, increased scrap usage, and responds to global pressures such as carbon tariffs and shifting trade dynamics.
