A coalition of environmental NGOs has formally challenged the European Commission’s carbon removal methodologies for Bio-CCS and biochar under the EU’s Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation (CRCF). The groups argue that the current rules may not guarantee permanent carbon dioxide removal and could fall short of the regulation’s core climate objectives.
The NGOs also raised concerns about carbon accounting, monitoring practices, and potential impacts on forests and agricultural land. They warn that weak certification standards could undermine the credibility of EU climate policies, affect investor confidence, and increase the risk of greenwashing if such carbon removals are later used to offset emissions within the EU Emissions Trading System.
