Microsoft has signed a long-term agreement to purchase 3.6 million metric tons of carbon removal units from C2X’s Beaver Lake Renewable Energy project in Louisiana. The $2.5 billion facility will convert sustainably sourced forestry residues into low-carbon bio-methanol while capturing and permanently storing CO₂. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with operations starting in 2029.
At full capacity, the plant aims to capture around 1 million metric tons of CO₂ annually. The agreement supports Microsoft’s broader goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030 and highlights its commitment to scalable, verifiable climate solutions while accelerating the development of engineered carbon removal technologies.
